Measles is a highly contagious illness that can cause serious complications, especially in young children. A measles outbreak has been declared in Snohomish County following three confirmed cases in children. The MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine is the only proven way to prevent measles and is up to 97% effective. It is recommended that children receive the first dose at 12 months of age and a second dose at 4 years old. However, due to the current outbreak, the Washington State Department of Health is now recommending that children ages 1-4 years old who live in or visit Snohomish County receive an early second dose of the MMR vaccine. If your family frequently visits Snohomish County, they are eligible to receive this early second dose as long as it has been at least 28 days since their last MMR vaccine. If they do not visit Snohomish County regularly, an early second dose is not needed at this time. We will communicate directly if cases spread and recommendations change. Please note that children ages 6-11 months are not eligible for an early MMR vaccine unless they are traveling internationally. We anticipate that many of our patients will qualify for and request this early dose, and we appreciate your patience as we work to meet the increased demand. It may take several days or weeks to fully support this increased need. We are actively partnering with the Department of Health to obtain additional vaccine supply and are expanding appointment availability as quickly as possible. If your child qualifies and has an upcoming visit, we encourage them to receive the early MMR dose at that scheduled appointment. If you would like to schedule an appointment, we strongly encourage you to book an immunization appointment online with our nurse or schedule a Well Child Check-up if your child is due. Keeping vaccines up to date is one of the best ways to protect your child and our community. If you believe your child may have been exposed to measles and is experiencing symptoms of illness, please do not bring them into the clinic. Instead, schedule a Telehealth Visit with one of our providers so we can advise you on appropriate next steps. If you have questions or concerns, please send us a secure message through your Patient Portal or call our office at (425) 598-2646. Sincerely, Shine Pediatrics
